Demands for Judicial Overhaul
11 August, PTI
Bangladesh's Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan resigned on
Saturday, five days after Sheikh Hasina's government fell amidst widespread
protests. The resignation came in response to demands from students
participating in the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, who had marched to
the Supreme Court and issued an ultimatum for the chief justice and the
Appellate Division judges to resign by 1 pm.
At around 1 pm, the 65-year-old chief justice announced his
resignation as protesters gathered at the court premises. In a Facebook video,
Prof Asif Nazrul, the law adviser of the newly-formed interim government,
confirmed that Hassan's resignation letter had been received by the law
ministry and would be forwarded to President Mohammad Shahabuddin for further
action. He noted that while the resignation of Chief Justice Hassan was
confirmed, there was no update on the resignation status of the other justices.
Chief Justice Hassan, who had earlier cancelled a full court
meeting, stated he decided to resign after discussions with Dr Asif Nazrul. The
student protests demanded the resignation of the chief justice and other
justices of the Appellate Division, highlighting the ongoing unrest and calls
for judicial reform in Bangladesh.
